Liwa (Liwliwa) is one of Zambales’ most loved surf spots — a laid-back grey-sand beach a short walk from Riverback Sanctuary. It’s mellow enough for first-timers, yet fun enough to keep experienced surfers coming back. Here’s how the waves work through the year so you can plan the right trip.
The two surf seasons
🌊 North swell — December to March (best all-round conditions)
This is the prime season in Liwa. The waves are consistent and often glassy, usually with little to no current, which makes it the friendliest time of year. It works beautifully for beginners learning their first waves, while still offering fun, clean rides for more experienced surfers. If you want the most reliable, easygoing conditions, come between December and March.
🌀 South swell — June to November (bigger, for the experienced)
This is typhoon season, so there’s a higher chance of bigger, more powerful waves and tougher conditions — stronger currents and wind. During active swells it’s better suited to confident, experienced surfers. That said, outside the stormy episodes there are plenty of calmer days with smaller waves, so beginners can still get out and learn too. Always check the forecast (and ask us) before you paddle out.
New to surfing? Take a lesson
If it’s your first time, the easiest way to start is with a lesson. We can arrange a one-hour surf lesson with a certified instructor and a board included, right on Liwa beach, a few minutes from your cabin. Just message us when you book, or ask at check-in, and we’ll set it up.
Good to know
- Liwa is a grey-sand beach break — no sharp reef, which is part of why it’s beginner-friendly.
- Bring reef-safe sunscreen; the midday sun is strong.
- Boards can be rented on the beach if you already know how to surf.
- The beach is roughly a 5–10 minute walk from Riverback Sanctuary.
